And Gabriel Meffre
created Plan de Dieu
Born in Gigondas’s neighbouring village of Séguret,
Gabriel Meffre grew up near Plan de Dieu, a sunny
pebbly plain that was long left fallow.
He was convinced that its proximity and similarity
to Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s topography meant that
it could produce fine wine.
In the 1950s, he purchased a few hectares of land
that no-one wanted; the soils were considered to
be too hard for vines to be able to root properly, not
forgetting that the land also became a minefield
during the war.
Gabriel removed the mines with shovels and picks,
then bought a few huge American ‘Caterpillars’
that were left behind after the liberation so that
he could break the ‘tuff’ crust that was preventing
the vines from rooting, before meticulously
clearing the area.
After huge amounts of hard work, the first vines
were planted!
And success was not slow in arriving. On this alluvial
terrace topped with limestone fragments from the
Quaternary period, the vines are flourishing and
producing elegant, intense, generous wines rich
in colour and flavour.
This terroir has confirmed its exceptional quality
vintage after vintage and other winegrowers are
starting to move in.
Plan de Dieu gained official recognition in
2005, when it was officially classified under the
Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages AOP.
