BEAUJOLAIS WINTER 2020-2021
NOUVELLES
DE BOISSET
Côte de Brouilly Les Grandes
Mises 2018 for Lydie
“It’s very difficult to name my favorite wine – there’s so many bottles, each with their
own personality to stimulate our taste buds. As a Beaujolais native, I was obviously
raised on Gamay. I like characterful wines, walks in fresh air, and my grandmother’s
cherries in syrup. And the Côte de Brouilly Les Grandes Mises 2018 reminds me of
the flavors of those childhood fruits.
For me, it’s always a pleasure to climb the slopes of Mont Brouilly to admire the
view, with the Alps in the distance, and the hills of the Dombes and the Beaujolais.
“A characterful wine, just how I like it.”
The soil there is very pebbly, with a preponderance of blue stones, which gives the
wine its particularity, both full-fleshed and generous, with slightly spicy aromas of
dark berries conjuring up childhood memories.
There is superb length in the mouth. This is a characterful wine, just as I like them.
To me, it’s one of the most distinctive Beaujolais crus.”
Two winemakers, two wines
The question is simple: What is currently your favorite wine? The answer is not so
straightforward, especially when it comes from a winemaker. But it is always a passionate
subject, as we can see from Lydie Nesme and Florent Georger, winemakers at Mommessin.
Saint-Amour Les Grandes
Mises 2019 for Florent
“By nature, wine is uplifting, convivial, and brings people together. The question
of what is your favorite wine is difficult for me to answer because every wine is
different. But I am a lover of Beaujolais and for now, the one that wins my heart is
Saint-Amour Les Grandes Mises 2019.
This small appellation located in the north of the Beaujolais comprises a little over
300 hectares, and its widely varying soils of granite, schist, and clay produce wines
that combine an easygoing style with complexity.
“A delight of concentrated fruit”
The 2019 vintage was not the most elegant in recent years in Beaujolais, but this
Saint-Amour Les Grandes Mises 2019 is a delight of concentrated fruit. It has aromas
of very ripe cherry and raspberry, with a powerful, generous finale.
And although I prefer to drink wines young, this one deserves a few years in the
cellar at the right temperature (very important) to be at its very best!”
