Before rosé wine was called rosé in France, it was cleret or clairet, and even vin clair in ancient times, when it was produced for domestic consumption. It wasn’t until the 18th century that it was poetically referred to as “vin de rosée*” evoking the morning dew, or rosée. Since then, it has continued to seduce wine lovers around the world.

The identity of a rosé wine is marked by the region it comes from, the varietal, the vinification style, the blend, and how it is aged. These are complex wines that are carefully produced and the expression they offer depends on how they are vinified. There are as many rosé wines in existence as there are varietals and blends. Their color palette offers an almost-infinite range of pink shades, only rivalled by their astonishing aromatic diversity.

An aperitif for any season

Fortant Marinière Rosé de Provence (AOC). Its powder-pink color wins one over at first glance. This is a delicate blend of Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah, with grapes harvested in the morning to preserve their freshness. Sweet and indulgent flavors of red berries and white blossom to light up an aperitif, a lunch on the shore, or an al fresco dinner. Sunshine and cicadas – you’re in Provence!

Bouchard Aîné & Fils Grand Conseiller 100% Pinot Noir. An intense raspberry color. On the nose, it offers an explosion of red berries and hints of citrus. In the mouth, the purity of the fruit combines with the smoothness of the wine and a light touch of acidity.

Antonin Rodet Coteaux Bourguignons Clairet (AOC) 100% Gamay. A pink color with hints of redcurrant precedes a fresh and lively nose of red berries. Indulgence and freshness dominate in the mouth.

Gastronomic rosés

Gaïa de Fortant Rosé Bio (IGP Pays d’Oc). A wine dedicated to vegetarian cuisine with a lovely rose-petal-pink color. This cuvée is produced from a blend of different plots of organic Syrah located on the hillsides of the Languedoc. A delicate, fruity, and lively wine.

Bouachon Le Pavillon Saint-Pierre, Côtes du Rhône (AOC). A salmon-pink color for this blend of Grenache for power and harmony and Cinsault for elegance and smoothness. An expressive nose of citrus that is echoed in the mouth.

Bouchard Aîné & Fils Prince Philippe Coteaux Bourguignons (AOC) 100% Gamay. A redcurrant color for this wine with aromas of red berries that are also evident in a mouth that is rounded and fresh.

For dessert and a fresh finish

La Capitainerie Fortant Languedoc organic (AOC). An elegant salmon-pink color for this haute couture rosé that combines a delicious fruitiness with length on the tongue. A subtle blend of Mourvèdre for breadth and aromatic richness, Syrah for its aromatic profile, and Grenache for power.

Mommessin Renovatio Coteaux Bourguignons (AOC) 100% Gamay. The regal varietal of the Beaujolais in a rosé version. A pale pink color for this indulgent and fresh wine with a bouquet of red berries to stimulate the taste buds as we emerge from the winter!

For a springtime picnic

Bonpas Réserve de Bonpas Côtes-du-Rhône (AOC). Pale pink in color, this gourmet wine is very expressive, produced from a blend of Grenache for texture, Syrah for floral and fruity aromatic complexity, and Carignan for freshness.

Nature de Fortant Grenache organic (IGP Pays d’Oc). This rosé with its delicate pink color with salmon highlights is all about fruit. The grapes are organic, grown by the coast where the Grenache grape can express roundness and freshness with complex notes of the Mediterranean scrub, citrus, and red berries.

Fortant Grande Nuit Grenache Gris (IGP Pays d'Oc). A translucid pink color like droplets of dew to evoke the cool nighttime when these grapes are harvested. This wine is characterized by its freshness and vivacity, with notes of thyme and red berries.

Bouchard Aîné & Fils Héritage du Conseiller 100% Pinot Noir. A raspberry pink color and an indulgent nose of hard candy. In the mouth, it is light and fruity, with delicate citrus notes.

For the seaside in summer

Fortant Marinière Grenache Gris (IGP Pays d'Oc). Rose-petal-pink in color, this indulgent wine offers a bouquet of succulent red berries and white blossom for a burst of freshness in the mouth.

Fortant de France Terroir Littoral Grenache (IGP Pays d'Oc). Its luminous pink color reflects its maritime roots. The Littoral spirit is a cooling wind that blows through the vines where the grapes are picked at night to preserve their freshness. The vines are influenced by the Mediterranean and the sea spray, resulting in this aromatic rosé with an explosive nose and lively personality.

Delicate vinification requiring precise expertise

Several elements are involved in the production of a rosé wine, where the art of the winemaker is fully expressed. First, the choice of varietal and blend. This is a fundamental step because the varietal contributes to the character of the wine. Then comes vinification, which requires some precise expertise to obtain the desired color and aromatic expression. A mastery of the maceration time, pressing, and temperature is essential for the quality of the wine and to achieve the right color.

Three vinification methods

Direct pressing: A lively, paler wine.

Grapes are pressed when they arrive at the winery. Depending on the varietal and pressure, the color of the must is more or less pronounced. The free-run juice and pressed juice are then either blended or vinified separately.

Bleeding: A colorful, structured, fleshy wine produced from red wine varietals.

The grapes are put into a vat to macerate for up to 24 hours before fermentation. Once the desired color has been obtained, some of the juice will be removed or “bled” from the vat for the rosé. The remaining wine is then used to produce a red wine.

Maceration: A colorful, fruity, and aromatic wine.

The grapes are left to macerate in their juice before pressing. Once the must has been racked off, the fresh skin and pips are pressed and the resulting juice is blended, either all or in part, with the free-run juice.
